Poetry
Introduction:
Poetry is a type of writing that uses language to express imaginative and
emotional qualities.
Poetry had deeper meaning due to the use of literary
terms or figure of speech.
Poetry is musical due to rhyme and rhythm.
It is used for aesthetic and
rhythmic qualities.
It is the writing using language and
sounds in special ways to express ideas.
It is that language which sounds in
peculiar form to express emotions.
It is uses rhythmic language for
expression of emotions and feelings.
The structure of poetry is verse and
stanza.
Its forms are: Sonnet, Ode, Tragic,
Comic, Satire, Lyric, Epic, Pastoral, Elegy Ballads etc.
Definitions:
Wordsworth says ‘poetry the spontaneous overflow of
powerful feelings; it takes its origin from emotions recollected in
tranquility’.
According to Coleridge ‘Poetry is best words in best
order.’
According to Mathew Arnold ‘poetry is criticism of
life’.
According to
Byron ‘poetry is the lava of imagination whose eruption prevents earthquake.
According to Plato ‘art (poetry) is thrice removed
from reality and the poets should be banished from ideal state.’
According to Aristotle ‘art (poetry) is not only
what is and was but also what should be’. He says ‘imitation is not
photographic representation of the things, but is a creative process. Poet
represents things better than they are; imitation is within us.’ ‘Poet writes
on particular for general e.g. in a garden he depicts only few plants.’
Types: Open, Closed and Mixed
Types:
Narrative, Dramatic and Lyric
Narrative: It is a poem that is in the form of a long poem. In this are
included poems such as epic which is a long about a hero.
Dramatic:
It is in dialogue form and is
written as a conversation between two fictitious speakers.
Its example are: My Last Dutchess.
It is written in verse form.
It mostly narrates a story or
portrays a situation.
