Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a vital marketing
tool and one of the most important documents in a person’s professional
life.
- A CV provides a summary of one’s educational background,
work experience, achievements, skills, and interests. It generally
includes personal details such as name, address, qualifications,
experience, awards, publications, presentations, and skills.
- It is the summary of your career history and education
that highlights your professional direction. A CV should demonstrate
credibility and capture the reader’s interest.
- A CV is like a personal advertisement. It should
convince a potential employer that you are an excellent candidate for the
job and that you can contribute effectively to the organization.
- It must leave a favorable and positive impression
on the reader.
Parts
of a CV
Some important sections of a CV are:
- Heading –
Name, address, and contact details.
- Personal Profile
– Strengths and personal summary.
- Experience –
Professional background and work roles.
- Achievements
– Major accomplishments and contributions.
- Career History
– Educational and job-related details.
Types
of CV
- Chronological CV
– Lists career history in reverse chronological order (starting from the
most recent).
- Skills-Based CV
– Focuses on skills, achievements, and competencies rather than dates of
employment.
Guidelines
/ Tips for Writing a CV
- Keep it concise:
Your CV should ideally be one to two pages long. If it exceeds
that, summarize and include only the most relevant details. If it’s too
short, add more about your skills and responsibilities.
- Use active verbs:
Use strong, action-oriented words to describe your achievements (e.g.,
“managed,” “developed,” “achieved”).
- Begin with the most recent:
List your educational qualifications, experience, and achievements
starting with the most recent.
- Avoid employment gaps:
Try not to leave unexplained gaps in your career history.
- Keep it updated:
Always include your latest experiences and qualifications.
- Be honest: Do not
exaggerate or provide false information about your skills or experience.
- Make it clear and neat:
Use bullet points, proper spacing, and short sentences to make your CV
easy to read.
- Ensure accuracy:
Eliminate spelling or grammatical errors — they create a poor impression.
- Include contact details:
Mention your current address, phone number, and email ID.
- Customize for each job:
Tailor your CV according to the position you are applying for.
- Avoid unnecessary details:
Do not include personal details such as marital status, family background,
or hobbies unless relevant.
- Include a cover letter:
Always send a brief, professional cover letter or email along with your
CV.
