Fictional Literature ( Definition, Meaning, Types)

Fiction  




Fiction is derived from Latin word “Fictionem” menas ‘something devised or feigned’.

Fiction descries something which is imaginary or invented.

Fiction is that type of literary narrative which has imaginary people, places or events.

It is based on imagination or events which are not real.

It is mostly fictitious account of something.

It is mostly in narrative form.

It is described in an imaginary form.

It is a story that did not actually happen in real life.

It is  based on imagination than on fact.

It did not actually happen in real life.

Its examples are: Jane Eyre, Great Expectations.

Types: Novel, Novella Short story Fantasy Mystery Romantic Thriller Science, Horror, Humour, Contemporary.  

Novel:

It is that fictional work which should contain atleast 50000 word and more than 120 pages.

Novella:

It contains words within the range of 20000 to 5000 .

It should not have more pages from 60 to 120.

Short Story:

It is a fictional work with the word limit of 1000 to 20000 words only.

It should have 25 to 30 pages only.

Fantasy: 

It is a story in fantasy world. It concentrates on imaginary elements.

 It is full of magic.

It deals with anything that a writer can imagine outside of reality.

 Its examples are The Last Unicorn, The Lord of Rings, The lies of Lock Lamora, and Harry Potter books.

Folklore:

 In this are included old cultural stories such fairytales, fables, myths, legends, and tall tales etc.

Historical:

 These are based on real history.

 Mostly it has real story but fictional characters.

Its action has been taken place in the past.

Its examples are: A Tale of Two Cities, The White Queen, The Name of the Rose, Innocent Traitor.

Mystery:

This is a story about crime.

It creates a mysterious situation and solves that.

2It is that novel in which a detective solves a crime.  

Its protagonists are mostly detective.

Its examples are: Agatha Chistie’s And the There were none, Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskerville, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl,  

Realistic Fiction:

 In this are included stories which seem to be real but actually are not real.

Its examples are:  Jane Eyre.

Romantic:

In this are included love story.

Its examples are: Jasmine Guillory’s The Wedding Date, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Science Fiction and Fantasy:

It depicts an imagined future with developed scientific and technological achievements.

It deals with imaginary concepts that might happen in the future.

It also imagines about major environmental and social changes.

Its examples are: George Orwell’s 1984, Amitabh Ghosh’s The Calcutta Chromosome, Audrey Niffeneggar’s The Time Traveler’s Wife, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.

Thriller/Suspense:

This is a story which makes us nervous and agitated.

The give the readers heightened feelings of suspense. 

Its examples are: The Girl With No Past.
