A. Lungs

The lungs provide the air needed for speech.

Most English sounds are produced when air moves:

B. Larynx

The larynx is also called the voice box.

It contains the vocal cords.


C. Vocal Cords

The vocal cords can vibrate or remain still.

Voiced sounds

When the vocal cords vibrate, the sound is called voiced.

Voiceless sounds

When the vocal cords do not vibrate, the sound is called voiceless.

You will feel vibration. Therefore, /z/ is voiced.

5. Active and Passive Articulators

An articulator is a speech organ that helps produce a sound.

Active articulators

These move during speech.

Examples:

  • Lower lip

  • Tongue

  • Lower jaw

Passive articulators

These usually remain fixed.

Examples:

  • Upper lip

Example

In the sound /p/, the two lips come together.

A consonant is a speech sound produced with some kind of obstruction or narrowing in the vocal tract.

Examples:

Consonants are mainly described in three ways:

  1. Place of articulation

  2. Manner of articulation

  3. Voicing


10. Place of Articulation

The place of articulation tells us where a sound is produced.

1. Bilabial

Both lips come together.

Examples:

  • /p/ – pen

  • /b/ – bag

  • /m/ – man

2. Labiodental

The lower lip touches the upper teeth.

Examples:

  • /f/ – fan

  • /v/ – van

3. Dental

The tongue touches or comes close to the teeth.

The air is completely blocked for a short time and then released.

2. Fricatives

The articulators come close together, but there is no strong friction.
