Homonyms, Homophones/ Misspelt words
Homonyms: The word “homonym” comes from the prefix “homo”, meaning “the same”, and the suffix “-nym,” means “the name”. Hence, Homonyms are words that sound alike and have different meanings. They either sound the same or are spelt the same, but their meanings are different. Two or more words with the same spellings but different pronunciation and meaning are called heteronyms.
Homophones: Homophones sound the same but have different meanings and have different spellings too.
1. Artful (Clever). An artful wife proves dangerous in the long run.
Artificial (not natural). Artificial flowers emit no fragrance.
Artist (One who practises a fine art.) Ram is a great artist.
2. Artisan (One who practises some handicraft). Masons and carpenters are artisans.
3. Apposite (proper). Your remarks were quite apposite at the occasion.
Opposite (Contrary). He belongs to the opposite party. You cannot rely upon him.
4. Amiable (lovable). Being an amiable child, he is liked by all.
Amicable (friendly). An amicable settlement was made between the two brothers about their property.
5. Alteration (change). There can be no alteration in the programme.
Altercation (quarrel). There was an altercation between the husband and the wife.
6. Altar (the place of worship). Many persons offered their prayers at the altar in the temple.
Alter (to change). I cannot alter my programmes.
7. Advice (counsel). He gave me a piece of good advice.
Advise (to give advice). I advised him not to go there.
8. Admit (to concede as true). I admit that your statement is correct.
Confess (to acknowledge a wrong). He confessed his fault.
9. Adopt (to receive or embrace). He adopted his brother's son.
Adapt (to make fit). You should adapt yourself to the changing circumstances.
Adept (skilful). Mr. Rashid is adept in the art of painting.
10. Accident (an unexpected event). A bus accident took place yesterday at Ramban.
11. Bridal (of wedding). I am going to attend the bridal feast.
12. Bridle (rein). It is difficult to control a horse without a bridle.
13. Brake (checking apparatus). My scooter met with an accident as its brakes failed.
Break (to come apart). He broke my heart by telling me false news.
14. Born (given birth to). A son was born to her.
Borne (carried). The patient was borne to the hospital.
15. Custom (usual practice of society). It is a custom among the Hindus to burn their dead bodies.
Habit (usual practice of an individual). Drinking is a bad habit among many people.
16. Dual (double). There are twenty dual desks in the school.
Duel (fight). The two friends fought a duel to decide their dispute.
Dye (to colour). He is dyeing his turban.
17. Dairy (a place for keeping milk). Go and bring two kilograms of milk from the dairy.
Diary (a book of daily events). Please note this engagement in your diary.
18. Exercise (training of mind or body). Morning walk is a good exercise for health.
Exercise (to expel evil spirits by prayer). He can exorcise ghosts from a haunted house.
19. Exhausting (tiresome). Writing work is an exhausting task.
Exhaustive (thorough). This is an exhaustive report on the students' strike.
20. Famous (used in good sense). Chandigarh is a famous city.
Notorious (used in good sense). He is a notorious boy.
21. Forceful (full of force). His words are forceful. Listen to him.
Forcible (done by force). The dacoits made a forcible entry into the house.
22. Fetch (to go and bring). Fetch me a glass of water.
23. Bring (to come taking something with one). Bring your bedding along with you when you come to attend the marriage.
24. Genius (rare natural ability). Tagore was a genius.
Talent (special ability, not natural but acquired). He is a talented man. He will be successful in life.
25. General (refers to all). It is a universal fact that the earth moves round the sun.
Universal (it refers to all). It is a universal fact that the earth moves round the sun.
Common (belonging to more than one but not all). The dowry system is very common in India.
26. Honorary (holding on office without pay). He is an honorary magistrate.
Honourable (deserving honour). He is an honourable man.
27. Hoard (to stock). The businessmen generally hoard wheat.
Horde (a gang). A horde of robbers attacked the town.
28. Imaginary (not real). It is only an imaginary story.
Imaginative (having imagination). He is an imaginative poet and can compose beautiful poems.
29. Ill (out of health). I am ill today and cannot attend the college.
Sick (incapacitated by illness). He is a sick man and should consult a doctor.
30. Lessen (to decrease). Morning walk can lessen your disease.
Lesson (work for pupil). Learn your lesson carefully.
31. Momentary (lasting only for a short time). The effect of this loss is only momentary.
Momentous (important). It is a momentous event in the history of our college.
32. Miner (on who works in a mine). Many miners were killed in the accident.
Minor (not of age). She cannot get the money from the bank as she is still a minor.
33. Necessaries (things without which life cannot be maintained). Many Indians have not got even the bare neccessaries of life.
Necessities (imperative needs). A radio set is a necessity these days.
34. Naughty (wicked). He is a naughty boy and does not behave properly in the class room.
Knotty (difficult). It is difficult to solve such a knotty problem.
35. Publication (making public). The publication of this book will solve many problems of the students.
Publicity (making public some secrets). He is giving publicity to my faults.
36. President (head of a body of persons). Mohinder Singh is the President of our college union.
Precedent (previous case taken as an example for subsequent cases). The concession given to you will not form a precedent for the future.
37. Pray (to offer prayer). One should pray to God every day.
Prey (victim). The lamb fell an easy prey to the wolf.
38. Practical (not theoretical). He made practical suggestions to improve the sanitation of the town.
Practicable (which can be put into practice). Your plan is not practicable in this area.
39. Right (just correct). 'Might is right' is an old saying.
Rite (ceremony). I attended the funeral rites.
Wright (maker). My friend is a famous playwright.
40. Straight (not curved). This road leads straight to Amritsar.
Strait (narrow). The road to honesty in very strait.
41. Stationery (articles used in writing). He is running a stationery shop in our town.
Stationary (fixed). The sun is stationary.
42. Tamper (to meddle). He has tampered with the official record.
Temper (anger). He loses his temper easily.
43. Virtual (actual). The head clerk is the virtual principal of the college.
Virtuous (morally good). Virtuous deeds bring their own reward.
44. Vain (fruitless). He tried his best to achieve his aim but all in vain.
Vein (blood vessel). Veins bring impure blood from different parts
45. Temporary (short lived). He has got a temporary job for six months.
Temporal (earthly). A throne is the symbol of temporal power.
46. Throne (seat of a king). Ashoka came to the throne after the death of his father.
Thrown (third form of 'throw'). He has thrown dust into my eyes.
47. Unqualified (not fully trained). He is an unqualified doctor.
Disqualified (debarred). If you use unfair means, you will be disqualified by the University.
48. Vacation (holidays). I shall go to some hill station during the summer vacation.
Vocation (profession). You must take up some vocation to earn your living.
49. Vain (proud, useless). He is a vain fellow. Though she is beautiful, yet she is not vain.
50. Vein (blood vessels). I have noble blood in my veins.
Vane (weather cock). The vane of the church is pointing towards the east.
51. Wane (decrease). His reputation as a patriot is on the wane.
Vale (valley). Pessimists think that life is a vale of sorrow.
52. Veil (cover for the face). The veil is hiding the face of the bride.
Wail (cry of pain). The wails of the poor widow moved my heart.
53. Virtual (in practice, not in from). A Patwari is a virtual dictator in a village.
Virtuous (noble). A virtuous man finds virtue every where.
54. Waste (to spend uselessly). Time is money, do not waste it.
Waist (part of body). A slim waist adds to the beauty of women.
55. Weak (infirm). He is too weak to walk.
Week (a period of seven days). There are seven days in a week.
56. Weather (atmosphere). If it rains, weather will be pleasant.
Whether (if). Tell me whether you are my friend or enemy.
